We learned that the most important celebration in Japan is New Year's Day.
We send Christmas cards for Christmas, but Japanese people send New Year postcards.
The postcards say あけましておめでとうございます!( Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu ) Happy New Year !
The postie delivers them all on January 1.
2015 is Year of the Sheep ( 未年、ひつじどし hitsuji doshi).
We made New Year hitsuji postcards for the Title Page in our Japanese books.
We used recycled foam to make a ひつじhitsuji to take home.

February 3rd is 節分 Setsubun in Japan, a 'spring cleaning day' for chasing away bad luck, and inviting good luck in.
We looked at some real おにoni (bad luck) and ふくfuku (good luck) masks from Japan.
We had heaps of fun chasing an おにoni (bad luck dude) on the oval, and threw rice while we shouted おにはそと!ふくはうち!
oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi (Bad luck go away! Good luck come and stay!).
We coloured a picture of an おにoni.

March 3rd (3/3) is ひなまつりHina Matsuri, the Doll Festival. This is a day to celebrate and pray for the health and happiness of girls.
We looked at several real Hina Matsuri dolls, and photos of sensei's friend's Hina Matsuri display.
We made a kokeshi doll for Hina Matsuri.
